Here are the highlights of the sky in January:
- 7 PM – Jupiter rises high in the southeastern sky after sunset
- 10 PM – the constellation Auriga, the Charioteer (or Goat Herder), which is home to Capella, the sixth brightest star in the sky, rises overhead in the northwestern sky
- 10 PM – Taurus constellation rises in the western sky, with the bright star Aldebaran marking the Bull’s eye, the Hyades cluster forming the Bull’s head, and the famous Pleiades cluster (Seven Sisters) lying nearby
- 5 AM – Saturn is visible in the southeastern sky before dawn; the rings can be seen in a small telescope
- 2 AM – Quadrantid meteor shower in the eastern sky, peaking on January 3 and 4; the radiant point is in Boötes constellation, not far from Ursa Major
