Highlights of the December Sky

Here are some of the highlights of the night sky in December:

  • 5:30 PM southwestern sky – Venus hanging low in the sky after sunset
  • 8 PM eastern sky – Jupiter hovering over the horizon and climbing higher later in the evening
  • 8 PM northeastern sky – the constellations Perseus with the open star cluster Messier 34 (M34) and Cassiopeia with the colourful double star Eta Cassiopeiae, the open star cluster Messier 103 (M103), and the Double Cluster lying between the two constellations
  • 6 AM southeastern sky – Mars and Saturn rising in the morning before sunrise
  • 1 AM southeastern sky – the Geminid meteor shower, peaking on the night of December 13 to the 14, with most meteors visible after midnight in the direction of Gemini constellation
