July Night Sky

Here are some of the things to see in July:

  • 9:30 pm, southwestern sky – Jupiter visible well above the horizon in the evening
  • 9:30 pm, southern sky – Saturn dominant in the southern sky
  • 4:30 am, eastern sky – Venus visible just above the horizon before dawn
  • 11 pm, southern sky – Scorpius constellation visible above the southern horizon, with Antares, the bright red supergiant representing the scorpion’s heart, and the bright globular cluster Messier 4 just next to the star
  • 11 pm, southern sky – Sagittarius constellation with the recognizable Teapot asterism and a number of famous deep sky objects, including the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8), Trifid Nebula (Messier 20), Omega Nebula (Messier 17) and the globular cluster Messier 22, also known as the Sagittarius Cluster
  • 1:30 am, southeastern sky – Delta Aquariid meteor shower, peaking on the night of July 27 to 28 with 10 to 15 meteors per hour
